A walk-through metal detector checks everyone quickly at a busy entrance. A hand-held detector finds the exact place of the metal after a walk-through alarm, and is enough on its own for small gates, exam halls and events. The walk-through gate screens everyone at normal walking pace and shows where on the body the alarm came from; the handheld is the secondary check after an alarm, or the only check where a gate does not fit.
