What does a thermal camera see?

A thermal camera sees heat, not light. It shows people, vehicles and hot spots in full darkness and through smoke or light fog, and headlights do not blind it. Models with temperature measurement raise an alarm when something gets too hot, for early fire warning. Thermal pictures do not show faces or number plates.

What does a thermal camera see that a normal camera cannot?

A thermal camera images heat, not light. It shows people, vehicles and hot spots in total darkness, through smoke, dust and light fog, and is not fooled by headlights or glare, so it suits perimeters, long open areas and fire or overheating detection. It does not read faces or number plates; for identification you pair it with a normal camera, which is what the bi-spectrum models do in one body.
